Quarterback Factory — The Terrapins have sent 14 quarterbacks to the National Football League: Bob Avellini, Jim Corcoran, Norman "Boomer" Esiason, Stan Gelbaugh, Shaun Hill, Mark Manges, Scott Milanovich, Tommy Mont, Neil O'Donnell, Al Pastrana, Frank Reich, Jack Scarbath, Dick Shiner, and Scott Zolak, earning the university the "Quarterback Factory" nickname.

Queen Anne's Hall — Dormitory constructed in 1949; named for Queen Anne's County, Maryland.

Queen's Game — On October 19, 1957, Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, journeyed to Byrd Stadium (now known as Maryland Stadium) to see "a typical American sport." As guests of University President Wilson H. Elkins and Maryland Governor Theodore R. McKeldin, they watched the Terrapins defeat the University of North Carolina Tar Heels 21 to 7. This major upset of one of the Terps' fiercest rivals has become known as the "Queen's Game."  Footage from the game has been digitized: View the first half and the second half of the Queen's Game.

Quidditch — UMD students formed a Quidditch team, based on the description of the sport in author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, that competed in the International Quidditch Association's World Cup in New York City in Fall 2010.  Players can often be seen flying about on McKeldin Mall in the evenings.

Quiz Bowl — The Terps won their first National Academic Quiz Tournament Division I Championship in 2008. Team members were Charles Meigs, Jonathan Magin, Chris Ray, and Mike Bentley.  Later that year, the team composed of Jonathan Magin, Chris Ray, Charles Meigs, and Jeremy Eaton captured the National Academic Quiz Tournament Division I championship.  Maryland won the Academic Competition Federation (ACF) championship nine years later and had previously won the College Bowl championship in 1981.  The Maryland B team has won the Division II crown in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) championship twice, in 2007 and 2019; participation in this division signifies that team members have never played in a championship tournament.
