Alice Illustrated Around the World
不思議の国のアリス
[Arisu in Wonderland].
Translated in Japanese by Satomi Hisami.
Illustrated by Jan Švankmajer.
Tokyo: Esukuaia Magajin Japan, 2006.
Czech contemporary surrealist Jan Švankmajer is wellknown for his Alice films, but not so much his Alice illustrations. Švankmajer’s illustrations are decidedly different from his films’ eerie interplay among puppets, a little girl, and threatening everyday objects like knives and tools. However, the illustrations in this edition are equally creative and brilliantly adapted to Japanese culture.
