Alice Illustrated Around the World

不思議の国のアリス

[Arisu in Wonderland].

Translated in Japanese by Satomi Hisami.

Illustrated by Jan Švankmajer.

Tokyo: Esukuaia Magajin Japan, 2006.

Czech contemporary surrealist Jan Švankmajer is well-known for his Alice films, but not so much his Alice illustrations. Švankmajer’s illustrations are decidedly different from his films’ eerie interplay among puppets, a little girl, and threatening everyday objects like knives and tools. However, the illustrations in this edition are equally creative and brilliantly adapted to Japanese culture.
