Early Books

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.

By Lewis Carroll.

Illustrated by Lewis Carroll.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1886.

This is a facsimile of Carroll’s original handwritten manuscript of the Alice story, as first told to Alice Liddell and her sisters, Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Carroll labored over the manuscript, finally presenting it to Alice on November 26, 1864. The dedication read: “A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer Day”.

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground is illustrated with Carroll’s own “crude designs,” as he called them. He later expanded his tale and contracted with Punch artist John Tenniel to illustrate the book, which was published under the new title Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
