Beyond Wonderland: Mad Magazine

Mad Magazine.

Volume 1, No. 15, September 1954.

Cover: “A MAD tea party.” Alice, the March Hare, and the Dormouse are all reading—what else!—Mad Magazine at this Mad tea party. John Tenniel’s illustration has been subtly altered by an anonymous artist. This is from the early days of Mad, when it was still a comic book, and touted “humor in a jugular vein.” However, this cover is just opposite—humor in an elegant understated vein. In 1954, the Tenniel Alice continues to be cultural reference available to all.
