Chalk Circle

Founded by Sharon Cheslow, Anne Bonafede, Mary Green, and Jan Pumphrey, and including Tamera Lindsay, and Chris Niblack, Chalk Circle was DC’s first punk band with all female members. Chalk Circle's music was as spare and angular as it was joyous and fearless. Active from 1981 to 1983, Chalk Circle overlapped and threaded through the DC hardcore scene, but blazed its own creative path in the face of the persistent sexism and dismissive attitudes they encountered from some male punks. Cheslow also co-edited the pivotal punk fanzine If This Goes On from 1982 to 1983 with future Dag Nasty drummer Colin Sears.
